The Sponsors Roll in Identifying Possible Candidates

Sponsors are the agents of change in the Precursillo. They are identifying in their environment individuals who are potential agents of change, people who in their daily lives show a positive attitude, a concern for their neighbors and a longing to be of service to their community, even if they are not now active in the Church.

Sponsors should ask themselves several questions when identifying possible candidates for the weekend. First it is important the sponsor know and recognize who is eligible to make a Cursillo. The sponsor wants to identify in the possible candidate will they benefit from this experience, and will they produce the most and best fruits for evangelization because of the experience.

                 The sponsor should consider;

1. Does the candidate have the ability to make decisions, a capacity for acting freely, and a capacity for loving?

2. Is the candidate a leader or does he/she have the potential to become a leader?

3. Does the candidate express discontent and/or a dissatisfaction with the way things are?

4. Does the candidate have a social conscience with a desire to become the leavening to create core Christian groups with the desire to penetrate their environments with the Gospel?

5. Does the possible candidate posses a generosity, caring about others and the world?

The Fundamental Ideas of the Cursillo Movement

                 It is necessary to ascertain:

1. Whether the candidates soul is aching for a change with a  manifestation of wonderment and therefore a capacity for humility.

2. What is their present attitude in things that normally interest them? What has been their concern up to this point? Are they:

· In general somewhat pious (do they possess a sense of Religion)

· In general somewhat self—sufficient (do they proclaim the truth)

· In general a – rare bird (do they demonstrate an inner beauty)

· In general happy (do they possess a sense of  happiness)

· In general  somewhat controversial (do they possess a sense of justice)

Structure of Ideas (Vertebration)

Whenever possible, several candidates should be selected from the same environment, so as to facilitate the formation of core groups in the Postcursillo. It would be nice if a group or a community were the sponsor supporting  the candidate. But this is not always the case and therefore it is important that the sponsor know the best way to prepare the candidate for the weekend.

Preparation of the Candidate

It is imperative that the candidate be provided and adequate preparation, so they may get what God wants them to experience on the weekend.  With an adequate preparation for the weekend it will facilitate their willingness to become and active member of a group and the nucleus of a community, during the Postcursillo.

Objectives of the preparation

1. To make it clear that the Cursillo weekend is a lived experience oriented toward the Church, toward community, toward real life.

2. To create a predisposition toward listening, to foster a readiness for conversion and to ignite a desire for God.

3. To awaken the desire to find fulfillment as a person and a Christian.

Ways of preparation

1. Promoting a dialog about the need to build a new social order that is more just and family oriented, one that is founded on the inviolable dignity of the human person.

2. Presenting Christianity as a valid answer to the specific dilemmas of de Christianization being forced on people. Presenting Christ as the model of grace and service to others.

3. Doing this presentation by word of mouth, by personal testimony of a life centered on Christ and involved with the community in which we live.

4. Leading a humble life seeing in others the potential for a conversion to a life of grace.

5. Taking the time to sow the seeds with love nurturing them as they begin to blossom into a follower  of and for Christ.

What is expected of a Sponsor?

1. They must understand the purpose of the Cursillo Movement; the environments that have been selected as priorities for evangelization; and the basic criteria as to who can, who should and who should not make a Cursillo.

2. They must be well acquainted with the candidates, through close personnel contact.

3. They must try through their witness of word, and of life, to awaken in their candidates an attitude of openness to inquiry, to friendship, and to change.

4. They should be an active member of a group, so as to help the candidate by example to become incorporated into a group of Christians, while accompanying the candidate for a reasonable length of time in the Postcursillo.
